Fishing Adventure Trips for Sturgeon, Stripers, and Shad

What does a fishing guide do when winter storms spoil the water conditions in our river systems...he fishes for Sturgeon!!

A great time to fish for Sturgeon is after a major winter storm when the bay is somewhat "churned up" from all the run-off. That is when the Sturgeon are on a feeding frenzy.

White sturgeon are the largest and most powerful fish in North American inland waters. We fish the waters of San Pablo Bay and the California Delta to catch these beasts which can weigh in excess of 400 pounds.

A typical bay rig for white sturgeon consists of a heavy saltwater rod with a soft tip, 25# - 50# test mainline, a 3 to 8 oz sliding sinker, and one or two 5/0 hooks mounted to steel leader. The best baits are cut fish, ghost and sand shrimp, and large clusters of nightcrawlers.

What does a fishing guide do when the steelhead season closes on March 31...he fishes for Stripers!!

The Striped Bass is a saltwater species that spawns in freshwater. Rather than making a bed, or a "red", they spawn on the surface. When we are fishing we have suddenly seen fish all around us, breaking the surface while several males pursue the spawning female.

We troll large plugs, free drift live bait, or fish cut sardines off the battom depending on the situation.

Striped bass are hard, powerful fighters. They aggressively attack almost anything that looks like food.

Striped bass are known to reach 75#.Runs are particularly strong in the Sacramento and the Feather River systems.

What does a fishing guide do when the stripers finish their annual spawning cycle...he fishes for Shad!

Shad runs can contain numbers of fish in the hundreds of thousands. Shad, commonly referred to as the poor man's Tarpon, generally run 3-6 pounds.

Shad enter many of our Northern California rivers in the spring. We fish for Shad on the Sacramento, Feather, American, and Russian Rivers.

These fish, provide an outstanding fight on fly and light spin tackle. The season lasts from May through mid-July. 100-fish days are not out of the question when you find multiple schools of Shad.

It truly doesn't matter what time of the year it is, the Osprey River Guide is fishing somewhere that can provide you with a memorable fishing adventure.
